When Is The Right Time To Use Self Storage?

Various situations in life require the use of self storage. Whether you're single, married, divorced or a business owner that need additional space to store personal belongings as well as stocks of products, utilizing a storage unit proves to be very helpful.

Any time you feel the need for extra storage space is the best time to seek a good facility that can meet your needs. Don't wait too long but take action right away and find a unit where you can keep your valued possessions. For sure, there's one near your place.

Home renovation. Most homeowners always want to make the place where they live as comfortable as possible for themselves and their family. Renovation and remodeling works then are inevitable. But with this also comes much work such as moving furniture, appliances, decors and other accessories to give way to the people who will be remodeling the house.

Having people in the house with your things disorganized can be quite annoying. So why not put your personal belongings first in a self storage unit for a month or so to free up your space at home.

Seasonal storage. People who don't have a big garage might find rental units useful for storing seasonal items. These can include Christmas trees, snow blower, lawn mower and sprinkler systems and the like. As these devices are used only during certain months, you can store them separately during off season.

Home selling. Some homeowners don't necessarily want to dispose all of their personal possessions when selling their residential property. While they may include certain appliances and furniture in the sale, they still want to keep the other ones particularly those that have sentimental values to them. To keep your valuables in safe place while you're still searching for the right buyer, it would be a good idea to use a self storage unit. Remember that home buyers are particular about space and organization in a home the reason why you need to declutter before putting your house for sale.

By utilizing a rental unit, you can have your peace of mind and not worry all the time about the safety of your belongings. This is whether you're still staying in your old home or have already moved to your new abode.

Too many documents. Having a business can result in a large pile of paper work. Despite the introduction of digital technology, some business owners still prefer to keep hard copies of important documents.

But if you have accumulated volumes of paper and no space to keep them in your office or home office, then it's time to store them in a self storage unit. You don't have to get a big unit because there are small units available these days. And the best part is you apart from your papers, you can store there your stocks and other office equipment that are no longer used.

So you see, you may need a storage unit at the most unexpected time. What matters is you choose one that's near your place and with the right security features.

The Many Benefits And Uses Of A Self-Storage Unit

Who hasn't at one point in their lives complained about not having enough space or a bigger room? This is why the self-storage facility was created and why it has been one of the fastest growing industries in the last two centuries. Aside from owning your own house or your own business address, a self-storage unit may be the next best piece of real estate you need to consider. Here are some of the many purposes and reasons for getting one:

1. A mover's convenient back-up plan. Say you're about to move to a new home, back with your new family or you're a student moving into your college dormitory. Whether it's a planned change of address or an unforeseen circumstance, a self-storage unit can help ease that worry about getting all of your things from one house to the next - especially if you are making the move on a limited time. Renting a self-storage unit for a month or two will help ease the stress and worry about renting a big van just so you can haul out your stuff in one day and then finding out that there is not enough space in the new home.

2. When you're renovating or remodeling your house. Self-storage units are a great help when you need to secure your valuable property for a short period of time while you're repairing or expanding a section of your home. Most of the self-storage facilities these days are equipped with state-of-the-art security systems so you can have peace of mind that your stuff is protected.

3. Start and keep your own collection. If you have a growing collection of artwork, photographic equipment or anything which you feel needs a special place that your current home does not have, renting a self-storage facility can be a practical solution. There is a growing number of self-storage facilities designed to hold special collections of items. They can be built underground for sub-zero temperatures, with sound-proofed or shock-proof walls, climate-controlled or computer monitored. There are even self-storage units that are designed like wine cellars complete with a wine-tasting section. You don't have to worry about incurring expensive construction costs in your own house but still keep your collection protected from the elements.

4. An affordable extension of your garage. Dreaming of buying a boat but don't have the space in your property to put it in? Using your garage for other things than parking your cars? Consider a self-storage unit. They are affordable alternatives to building a second garage. Aside from this, you can rest assured that they won't be stolen or vandalized unlike if they're just covered with a tarp and parked in front of your house.

5. Warehouse space for your small business. Small or start-up businesses like catering, selling food stuff or even selling online can benefit from a self-storage unit which will hold the extra inventory of goods you can't store in your house. With a self-storage unit you can keep track and monitor what goes in and out and arrange them according to your business needs.

Sometimes, it can be very difficult to stay organized. After all, you have so many things that you know that you are always going to need. Unfortunately, you don't have a place to keep them. Rather than tripping over them on a regular basis, consider putting some of your things into a self storage facility. This way, you can still access your things whenever you need them. They will be available to you 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It is the perfect way to store your things out of sight and out of mind.

Your self storage unit comes in a number of different sizes. It will be up to you to decide how large of a unit you are going to need. No matter what your situation happens to be, it's nice to know that there is a safe place where you can put your things when you don't need them.

If you are going to be storing a recreational vehicle, you can drop it off when you are done with it. When you are ready to use it again, you can come over and pick it up. This way, you can get it ready to go camping. In the meantime, you don't have to worry about finding a place to store your RV. This is definitely something that isn't fun to look at. Not to mention, it will take up a lot of space in your driveway. Many people make the mistake of selling their RV because they don't want the hassle that comes from trying to find a place to park it.

You can stop by your self storage facility whenever you have some extra time. This way, you can look at the different units that are available. This will give you the opportunity to decide what size of unit would be best for your needs. Keep in mind, if you decide that you need a larger unit, you can always switch. You are under no obligation to store your things for a long period of time. You can keep them in storage for a few weeks or even a few years. It's up to you to customize your needs for your storage unit.

Benefits of Self-Storage for Businesses

Self-storage facilities are a great solution for your personal belongings, but they also work quite well for businesses. Companies can operate more cost-effectively if they only keep what they need in the work area. Using storage units is an effective logistics solution, allowing a business to cut back on necessary office space, in order to save money. Using self-storage units, a business can keep everything not needed in day-to-day business in one place that has easy access.

Self-Storage Can Replace Warehousing Costs

Businesses may use cheap storage options to free up warehouse and office space. If a company does not have a large warehouse, this is a more economical way to store excess merchandise. Storage units can also be used for paper files and records. Businesses commonly use storage for:

  • Storing items not needed everyday
  • Archiving files, documents and other paperwork
  • Storing new or old stock
  • Storing excess equipment and office furniture
  • Storing overstocked items
  • Storing files and equipment during moves
  • Storing office supplies bought in bulk, to save money

Businesses and Paperwork

For offices that deal with a great deal of paperwork, a self-storage unit is the perfect place to securely store files not needed in the office. They can still be comfortably and easily retrieved, if they are needed.

Government regulations require that some businesses keep their records for a period of years. Keeping that many records on-site could overwhelm your office, which is why business managers rent storage units.

Businesses that Need Off-Site Storage

There are various business types that need storage. They include:
  • Accountants
  • Attorneys
  • Physicians
  • Architects
  • Financial Advisors

Business storage can be used in the same ways as personal storage. You will choose the proper sized unit for your needs and transport the items to store, unpacking them and storing them in your unit. It's important to stack your items neatly, so that they can be retrieved if they are needed.
Storage facilities may provide additional services geared to businesses, since they may store more items than personal households do. Speak with the manager of the self-storage facility you are thinking of using, to ensure that their rates are competitive.

Why Self-Storage?

Some business people do not see all the benefits of storing documents or equipment off-site, to free up space in the office. Storing files and documents in a central location will make them easier to access, especially if you have offices in more than one area. You will have a space that is secure in which to store these documents. There are many different sizes of units, which can be used as business or office libraries, depending on the needs of your business.

Your company's files and papers can be safely stored in a climate-controlled environment, so that they will not become damaged in any way. They can be easily accessed whenever you need them. The way you store your business items is as important as the location.

Thankfully, storage facilities are located in convenient places; thus, they can be accessed easily. A Storage Space For Hoarders

There are individuals who have a hard time letting go of things, even when those things have become useless and broken over time. This condition is known as hoarding. Hoarding is basically the fear of throwing something away because the individual feels that they might need it someday. Selling A House

Storage units are also beneficial when you are selling your home. The fact is that a house becomes more attractive, especially to potential homebuyers, when there is less clutter. Homebuyers are also looking into houses that have enough space; thus, clearing out the clutter and unnecessary things at home will make the house more spacious. With that said, it is recommended to first de-clutter your house before putting it on the market.

This means that you have to pack away some unnecessary items, such as old lounges, ornamental pieces, and other pieces of furniture that are not essential at home. Since storage units come in various sizes, you can choose the right storage space you need for your items. Additionally, storage facilities can also provide you with a quote to assess the space you will need, and even help you move the items.

Space For Your Hobbies

Storage units can also provide the space you need if you have an elaborate hobby that needs space. For instance, storage units can come in handy if you collect and read books, magazines, or comics, or you need to store the things you've built, such as trains and tracks. Packing Things For Self Storage

It might be that you need a temporary storage or you need storage for a long time for your special items like vintage automobiles etc, renting out space at a self storage unit would be an ideal solution for you. Your items will be safe and secure in a self storage facility. After deciding to go with self storage facility, you need to plan for a smooth transition. You can avoid the stress of packing getting to you if you plan in advance. Even if you are planning to store only one or two items, early planning would give you a worry free experience.

. Think and list out all the items you are going to store in the storage unit. Separate, sort and organize those items. Get the packing supplies like rectangular durable boxes, bubble wrap, scissors, markers, packing tape etc ready.

. First, disassemble devices or furniture. Remove wheels. This saves you lot of space. Use tape to adhere things like bolts, nuts, screws to the place of the item where it came from. This will help re-assemble items whenever you want.

. Use bubble wrap, newspapers to wrap fragile items.

. Label all the boxes with their contents. Also add date, notes and other important details. This will help you sort your boxes during the packing. You can also easily access your items when you attach clear labels.

. Try to keep related items together. For example kitchen items like mixer and toaster should go into the same box. In case of moving, you can put this box directly in the kitchen.

. Also mark boxes which require careful handling as 'heavy', 'fragile' etc.

. Seal all the boxes.

You would require similar planning that you have done for packing for moving your items to self storage facility. It would ease your job of moving if your storage company provides elevators and hand-carts. Do not pack items in plastic bags. Mildew might damage your items.

. Keep a pack of packing supplies like markers, tape, bubble wrap. You may need these while moving your items in to the storage unit. Some storage companies sell these packing supplies on their site.

. Keep longer items vertically. See that you place heavier items at the bottom and light and small items on top.

. Place the items that you may not need to access frequently at the back of the unit and items you may require frequently at the front.

. You need to optimally utilize the unit space. Think wisely and logically. For example you may stack your chairs on top of each other. Keep similar things together.

. Your moving experience will be pleasant and less stressful if you plan well.
