Self Storage In 5 Easy Steps

Moving is always a time of transition. This is especially true when that transition involves moving to a place with less storage space. It might be a place with fewer bedrooms, the loss of a basement or attic, or more people living without more room. Whatever the cause, you might be faced with self storage requirements.

Save yourself time, stress and money on your self storage/ mini storage needs with the tips in this article.

Self Storage: The Basic Steps

1. Identify the size of the self storage unit you'll need and how long you'll need it.
2. Make a "Self Storage Feature List" of the features you'll need (climate control, security, location, 24 hour access)
3. Develop a list of potential self storage locations. Check your list against _______. 4. Visit top self storage locations and compare them against
5. Make your final choice and sign the contract.

Self Storage Step 1: Identify the size of the self storage unit you'll need and how long you'll need it.

Just to point out the obvious, you'll save money and time by putting fewer, smaller items into self storage. That means you're better off doing one or more of the following with excess items:

· Sell them at a moving sale.
· Donate them to charities such as Goodwill, The Salvation Army or The Purple Heart.
· Give them away to people who can use them now and value them.
· Store them with family or friends IF it's for a very brief time and they're willing.

Once you've eliminated what you can, it's time to figure out how much space you'll need. Self storage units vary from one location to another, but here are some basic sizes and guidelines, adapted from "The Storage Place Inc" website:

· 5' x 5': holds a small number of boxes or small bedroom furniture.
· 5' x 10': holds a few pieces of furniture, including a couch.
· 10' x 10': holds the contents of a small, one-bedroom apartment.
· 10' x 15': holds the contents of a small, two-bedroom apartment.
· 10' x 20': holds the contents of a small, two-bedroom house or a small car.
· 10' x 25': holds the contents of a larger, two-bedroom house or a larger car.
· 10' x 30': holds the contents of a three-bedroom house, or the contents of a 36-foot moving van.
· 10' x 40': holds the contents of a four-bedroom house.

Use this list to narrow down the size of space you'll use.

Self Storage Step 2: Make a "Self Storage Feature List."

After deciding on the size of self storage unit you'll need, to identify what features you want to go with it. Think of it as a "shopping list" for comparing self storage units.

It's a good idea to break down the features into 3 categories based on how important they are to you:

* A - Absolute musts. If a self-storage unit does not have this feature, you won't consider it.

* B - Better to have than not. These are features that would be plusses, but not required.

* C - Couldn't care less. As the name would imply, these features may exist, but don't really matter to your decision.

Here is our list to help you get started:

· convenient location
· climate control
· 24-hour direct access
· monitored security cameras
· security guards on premise
· sprinkler system
· alarm system
· insurance available
· payment methods accepted

Self Storage Step 3: Develop a list of potential self storage facilities.

Now that you know what you're loking for, it's time to begin the search process. You can kick off the process by investigating five of the most popular self storage companies:

· Public Storage
· U-Haul (yes, the same company that offers truck rentals)
· ExtraSpace Storage
· United Stor-All
· U-Store-It

Check your self storage candidates against the Self Storage Feature List that you created earlier. Any facilities that are missing "A - Absolute must" features should be crossed off.

Self Storage Step 4: Visit top self storage locations and compare them against one another.

Yes, I realize that actually taking the time to visit each of your top choices isn't convenient. However, there are things you will discover by visiting that you wouldn't otherwise. How does the location look? Does the neighborhood seem stable? Is the facility as easy to reach as you imagined? What's the condition of the existing storage units? Does the place seem well-maintained?

Take notes at each facility and clearly mark which property you're visiting. Eliminate from your list any of the locations that seem sketchy.

Self Storage Step 5: Make your final choice and sign the contract.

If you've followed all the previous steps in this article, this final step should be relatively easy. Try to order each of your final candidates by how well they did in each category. If you're finding it difficult to choose your top pick, try eliminating your least favorite option first, then repeat the process until you have your final pick.

Please note that the price of the monthly rate is a very important factor, but it isn't the only factor. There's something to be said about paying for peace of mind- if you lay awake at night worrying about the safety of your belongings, you've made the wrong choice.

Speaking of rental rates, be sure to ask your self storage facility manager if they provide any of the following discounts, programs or bonuses that might apply to you:

· First or last month free
· Rental discounts for seniors, students, or military personnel
· Discounts on related items or services such as moving boxes and supplies, rental trucks or moving companies

When signing the final contract, you may be offered insurance coverage. Make sure that you aren't already covered by your homeowner's insurance, and be very clear about exactly what is covered, whether damaged or stolen items are reimbursed at replacement cost levels, and what any deductibles may be. Ideally you wouldn't be storing anything of value in an unattended storage unit, but if you are, you want to make certain you aren't paying for insurance coverage that doesn't fully protect you.

These steps should allow you to have a successful self storage rental experience.

10 Ways That Self Storage Units Are Valuable

We all have a tendency to accumulate too much stuff. If that's you, there's no need to feel guilty about it - especially when there's a perfect solution that doesn't involve getting rid of your prized possessions. Maybe you just need to find somewhere else to keep the things that are special, but don't need to be on display. A self storage unit is the perfect way to make your life less stressful. Here are 10 ways that self storage units can be valuable:

1. You can use a self storage unit to keep that extra furniture that you just can't bear to part with. You never know when you or someone else might need it and you know how expensive it will be to buy more. Maybe you've downsized your home and you don't need so many beds, tables and chairs. A self storage unit is a great place to keep your spare furniture until you are ready to decide what to do with it.

2. If you're lucky to be going overseas on a long-term holiday, you don't want to sell everything and have to start again when you return. It's much more sensible to rent a self storage unit for the duration of your time away. When you return, you'll be able to set up house and get back to normal more quickly than you expected.

3. Perhaps your kids have left home but they haven't taken all their worldly possessions. You want the house to yourself at last, but you don't want to get rid of their stuff. It's hard to know what they'll need and what they'll be happy to part with - and it's hard to pin your kids down to make a decision. Instead of fretting about all that, a self storage unit is a great value for money way of solving the problem. The kids' gear will be there when they need it and you'll have the house to yourself. Perfect!

4. If you are a sports lover, your garage is probably full to the brim with sporting equipment. If it means you can't fit the car in the garage, you might need to have a rethink. A self storage unit is a great solution. Your sports equipment will be safe, secure and kept at the right temperature. You can even set the unit up so it's all stacked and shelved to make life really easy. Just drive in, pick up the gear and off you go.

5. Maybe you have a hobby that needs its own space. It might be fixing an old car, making model airplanes or any number of other activities. If that's you, then you know what it's like when other people move your stuff. To make sure everything is left exactly the way you want it, rent a self storage unit for your hobby gear and you'll never have to worry about it again.

6. Life can generate a lot of excess paperwork and a lot of it can't just be thrown away. If you feel like you're fighting a losing battle with paper, documents and archived records, consider a self storage unit. It will make a big difference to your stress levels and keep your documents safe.

7. Sometimes you need a workshop or a studio to potter about in at the weekends and there's just nowhere suitable at home. A self storage unit is the ideal answer. You can get away by yourself, get creative and then get back to reality when you're ready. And you know that all your workshop materials will be in one place when you need them again.

8. If you've sold the house and haven't found a replacement, you might be thinking of a temporary solution. But what do you do with all your gear? A self storage unit is the answer. They come in several sizes, including a size that's just right to hold a houseful of possessions.

9. When you're trying to sell your home, the best thing to do is to go for the minimalist look! That means decluttering big time. But what do you do with all the extra stuff? A self storage unit is just the right answer. Your prospective buyers will be amazed at the look of your home and be much more likely to put in an offer - which means you'll be able to move to your dream home much more quickly.

10. If you have some really valuable possessions that don't look right in your home, it's hard to know what to do with them. One option is to store them in a self storage unit. You know they'll be safe and secure and - who knows - they might even increase in value!

Exactly What Is Self Storage?

Self storage is used by nearly 1 out of 10 American households to store their excess goods. In the recent past, self storage simply consisted renting a 'storage unit' from your neighborhood storage facility, however recently other options have become available, such as portable and ship-to-store options. In addition, not every self storage facility is the same anymore. In the past, almost every self storage facility consisted of the same metal buildings with roll-up garage doors, situated neatly between residential and commercial areas in every city. Today self storage facilities offer numerous different amenities and options including climate controlled units, units with interior access only, self storage facilities with multiple stories and different security and access options just to name a few.

Self Storage still most often pertains to renting a traditional self storage unit at your local self storage facility. Self Storage is often used during times of transition such as:

  • Moving
  • Remodeling
  • Military deployment
  • College/semester breaks
  • Business excess (inventory, equipment, supplies, etc.)

The self storage rental process is fairly easy. Storage unit rental agreements are typically month-to-month and the entire process from the time you choose a facility until the time you can begin moving your belongings into your new storage unit typically takes less than half an hour. When renting self storage you must take your goods down to the facility and unload them into your unit. Many facilities offer the use of a rental truck to load your belongings. Sometimes as a promotion the rental truck is discounted or free to use for moving in.

Most storage facilities also charge a onetime administration or move-in fee. Once you have signed your lease then you alone have access to your storage unit. Most storage facilities will require some type of insurance on your goods. Sometimes your homeowner's policy will cover the contents of your storage unit; if not, almost all facilities will have insurance that you can purchase.

Most of the time you must provide your own lock, however many facilities will provide you with a lock either as a standard practice or as part of a move-in special. The disk lock is recommended as the most secure type of lock. Self storage facilities often have other security measures such as:

  • Fenced in properties
  • Electronic Gate Access
  • Security Surveillance Cameras
  • Bright Lighting
  • On-site managers

Typically storage facilities will have office hours and gate hours. They usually follow normal business hours during the week and have limited hours on the weekends. Gate hours are the hours that you can get onto the property to access your unit. These are usually extended beyond the normal office hours and are typically somewhere around 6am - 10pm seven days a week.

Storage units range in size, with the smallest unit typically being 5'×5' and the largest being somewhere around a 10×30. Depending on the market you are living in you can find larger and smaller units. Large, heavily populated areas can offer self storage in a storage locker that is even smaller than 5'x5' and some storage facilities offer large garage type storage units that will hold a recreational vehicle. Ceiling heights are usually somewhere between 8 and 10 feet tall. Many facilities have model units to help you determine what size of unit you need. Most storage facilities sell everything you will need for packing and storing including boxes, bubble wrap, tape, mattress covers, and more.

You can typically count on holding on to your self storage unit in perpetuity as long as you continue to pay your rent. Most self storage facilities now offer automatic payment options using a credit card or automatic checking account debit. These options not only save you time and from having to remember to make the payment each month but can also save you from possibly losing your possessions if you forget to pay the rent for an extended period of time.

It is important to always notify your self storage manager of any changes in address, phone number, e-mail or other contact information so if they can reach you if they need to - whether they need to discuss rent payments that are due or need to notify you of scheduled maintenance at the facility that could affect you. When you no longer need your self storage unit it is important to make sure you notify your manager with the proper notice stipulated in your rental agreement. After moving out your possessions it is always important to clean your unit - cleaning to a "broom-sweep" level is normally acceptable. It is also a good idea to make the time to do a final inspection of the storage unit with the manager after the unit is emptied and clean. This is important so you are sure there is no damage done to the unit between the time you move-out and the next time the manager inspects it.

4 Revolutionary Riddles Resolved!

A few notes on the puzzle:
1. A half-full container of honey does pretty well in reproducing the behaviour of the mystery cylinder. I wonder if the motion is a little smoother or more periodic with the ping-pong balls because they move as organized objects - also the delays between motion seemed to be longer with them than without ping pong balls.

2. For the average speed track problem, every time I said velocity I meant speed. Sorry to the pedants out there who are perhaps looking for some trick answer due to displacement being zero when you run around a track.

3. Although a lot of people identified it was something about a train's wheels that move backwards, fewer identified that specifically it was the part of the flange below the rail. Some simply said the bottom half of the wheel.

4. The bicycle question is perhaps the most complex of these riddles. If you tried it with a bike you likely found that it went backwards. But what happens if you sit on the bike and only push backwards on the bottom pedal. The answer might surprise you so give it a shot!

Some Things That You Need To Know About Self Storage

Looking for self storage in your area? Self storage can be needed for a large number of purposes. It can be needed for things such as decluttering, craft storage, extra space storage, kid home from college storage, storing the personal belongings of a loved one who has recently passed away, storing fitness equipments, storing yard sale stuff, remodeling house storage, business storage and many more.

The purpose of this article is to provide as much information as possible about the self storage industry and self storage facilities. To begin with, let us look at some of the essential tips on how to find local self storage.

Finding Local Self Storage Companies

1. Going to the storage location directly - if you have noticed some self storage locations around your local area, then you can drive to the location directly and find out more about their services. Storage companies will most probably choose locations which have a good face value. In other words, access to the location will be easy.

2. The phone book can be really helpful when it comes to finding storage services in your local area. The yellow pages will have contact numbers of the companies which offer storage services. Although information will not be as detailed as you would find on the company website, you will still be able to get hold of the phone numbers and also the location address.

3. Storage companies can also be found through the print media. Companies pay huge amounts of money to get their advertisements published in the newspapers and magazines. You can look through your local newspapers and magazines to see if they have advertisements about self storage companies.

4. Billboards, radios and the television are also good ways for the local storage companies to get their names out there. When listening to your favorite music station, watching television or travelling the highway, look out for these advertisements.

5. If you have access to the internet, you can simply search and get the results. These days, more than 80% of the storage companies have websites to attract potential customers. Your local self storage website will include information such as security features, rental payment information, how to get to the site, sizes of units, gate hours and other important information that will help you choose the one which suits your storage needs.

How To Choose The Best Self Storage Facility?

If you are considering making use of a self storage facility, it is important for you to choose the best one. Choosing the best one will ensure that you have a pleasant storage experience. Here are some of the important things that you must consider if you are looking for the best self storage facility.

- There has to be adequate security measures in the storage facility
- The units which are available are the right size to meet your individual needs.
- The units are suitable for the type of items you are looking to store. If you want to store valuable items, you must ensure that the storage unit has concealing walls so it is not possible for anyone else to see what is inside.
- The facility is climate controlled to avoid unnecessary damage to your items. For example, if the unit is not climate controlled, the space in which you store your items may become warm and damp in a few months. If you have stored items such as clothes and upholstery in the unit, then chances are that they will become damaged.
- The facility must take measures for pest control. This will ensure that your belongings are safe within the facility.
- Storage units must be clean, neat, tidy and well maintained
- There will be no hidden surprises when you go through the fine print

Types of Self Storage

There are four types of self storage. These include:

1. Climate controlled self storage - such storage units are available within enclosed buildings. All the units are humidity and temperature controlled which provides protection to the valuables. In all climate controlled self storage facilities, access is limited to authorised users. There is close monitoring and hi tech security systems in place.

2. Non climate controlled storage - these are much cheaper than the climate controlled units. These are located outdoors and are multiple row set of garages. They look very much like typical garages, expect that a number of units are linked to each other and divided with mesh partitions. Non climate controlled storage facilities enable users to drive up to the door of the unit and pick up or drop off items.

3. Portable container storage - mostly used when people consider carrying out remodeling work at home and need storage space for their belongings. When you make use of this kind of self storage facility, the company will deliver a container to your door step in which you can store your belongings. You can choose to keep this container storage unit on your property or you can have it picked up by the company once you have stored your belongings. Your belongings will be kept safe in these containers and when the company takes the unit, they will store it at their facility until you need your belongings.

4. Information management service - when you make use of information management service, the company will pick up files from your home or office and transport them to their climate-controlled storage units. Your items will be delivered back to you upon request. Items that can be stored mainly include files, folders and other kinds of paperwork. Such facilities do not store large items such as furniture, tools and home equipments.

Getting Insurance For Your Self Storage Items

Most people assume that self-storage companies provide insurance for their items. In most cases, this is not the case. You may be able to get comprehensive insurance for your belongings, but this service will be added to the cost of your facility rental. Certain companies may offer basic coverage which will be included in your agreement. However, this kind of insurance is usually not enough for the items stores in these facilities, in case of losses and damages. For this reason, it is important for you to research all insurance options. This also includes those which are offered with the agreement.

One of the best ways to get insurance for your self storage items is to find out from your home insurance carrier. There are some who will offer coverage for your storage items. However, it is important for you to ensure that you verify the amount of coverage that is being offered. This is because most policies will reduce the amount of coverage for items stored away in storage facilities. But, you may be able to buy additional coverage for at an added price. On the other hand, you can also purchase a separate policy from your home insurance carrier.

You must remember that only padlocks and security gates will not necessarily stop burglars from entering. It has been proven that a large number of burglaries in self storage facilities are a result of an inside job. In most cases, these burglars are regular customers just like you who have rented a storage unit and carry out their activity when it is the right time to do so. They enter the self storage facility just like a regular customer and cut the padlocks of different units with bolt cutters and replace these padlocks with their own. Once they have done this, they can come back at anytime through the security gate and take other's belongings. If you want to avoid this kind of nightmare, it is important for you to find out if the self storage facility uses cylinder locks rather than padlocks and if they have installed alarms on every door in their facility. Moreover, ensure that they have surveillance cameras covering as much space as possible within the facility.

4. What Are The Fees and Discounts?

There are many self storage facilities which offer a low rate at the beginning and raise their rates a few months after you have moved your belongings in. Before you choose a facility, ask the manager about their move in rates and how often their increase their rates.

Self storage fees will vary depending on your storage needs. If you need a large storage unit, you should expect to pay a higher price as well. Sizes usually range from 5 x 5 foot to 10 x 40 foot. Whether you are looking to store a box of books or a car, you will have to pay depending on the size you choose.

You can save money with careful planning. A large number of people end up paying more money than that is needed. This is because they choose storage units which are too big for their belongings. If you plan carefully and pack your items properly, you will be able to determine the kind of storage space you will need. Storage units come in different sizes and with different prices. By choosing a self storage unit that is the right size for your belongings, you will be able to save money.

5. What Unit Size Do I Need?

This will depend on the amount of items you are looking to store. If you have already planned what items you will be putting in storage, try to arrange them in way so you can determine the size of unit that you will need. Packing them in boxes can help you get an idea of the size of unit that you should rent. Moreover, you can also seek assistance from the self storage representatives. They will be able to help you find a suitable storage unit for your needs.

6. What Must I Know About Self Storage Contracts?

You must also know about the contracts. Most self storage companies will require you to make an upfront deposit. Deposits such as any rental agreements, use of equipment for example moving blankets during the rental period and cover damage. This amount will normally be refunded back to you when the contract expires.

7. What Are The Types of Self Storage Available?

There are two main types of self storage. This includes indoor storage and shed storage. Indoor storage is usually temperature regulated and has insulated walls. This provides protection against environmental damages such as fire. Shed storage aren't insulated or temperature regulated. This makes renting indoor storage units expensive.

8. Do I Need A Climate Controlled Unit?

Climate controlled self storage will protect your belongings from extreme weather conditions. This is especially true if you are looking to store belongings such as wooden furniture and clothing items. When these items are stored in standard storage units for long periods of time, it is not surprising to see mildews on the fabric and warped wood. If you are looking to provide added protection to your belongings, choose a self storage facility which is climate controlled. A climate controlled facility basically includes heating and air conditioning units to maintain a consistent climate within the facility.

9. Can I Get Insurance For My Belongings?

Most self storage companies do not provide insurance against any damages or losses. There are some which provides optimal insurance which covers against environmental damages such as lightning, fire, water leakage, smoke, hail and tornado. However, not all the items that you store will be covered under the insurance plan. Such items may include jewellery, precious stones, stamps, card collections, art, currency, etc.

10. What Is The Rental Period?

The minimum rental period in most of the self storage facility is one month. You can store your items in the facility for one, two months, one year or for any length of time.

11. Are All The Self Storage Facilities The Same?

First of all, you must understand that not all self storage facilities are the same. For example, if you live in Leeds, you will find hundreds of self storage facilities in your area. But, will all of them offer the same level security, availability, cleanliness and customer service. There are numerous differences between the different self storage facilities and knowing these differences can help you make the right choice.

12. What Are Self Storage Auctions?

A self storage auction is held when a person has abandoned goods in a storage facility and has failed to pay rent. An auction is held to recover the costs, unpaid fees, rent, etc. Even if people cannot pay for the storage unit in cash, self storage facilities allow them to auction their goods to pay off bills which are due.

Tips For Packing Your Storage Unit

It can be confusing to know what size storage unit to get for all of your belongings. You do not want to get a unit too small for all of your stuff. This causes you to over pack your unit and often means some of your things will get damaged because of the way you were forced to pack. You also do not want to get too large of a unit and pay more than needed. Packing your storage unit efficiently will help you avoid both of these mistakes. Here are a few tips that will allow you to organize your storage unit and keep your items from becoming damaged:

Consider What you are going to store ahead of time. It is important to think about what items you want to store in your unit before you go and look at facilities and prices. Is this unit going to be for items you wont need in the next year or will you actually remove and replace items in your unit often? Knowing this it will help you realize how organized your items need to be.

Think about how you want to pack your storage unit before you get there. What items will you not need to get to in the near future? These are usually the items you will want in the back of the unit. Knowing this, you will want to pack these items last in your truck or trailer so they can be the first items loaded into the unit. Planning the organization of your unit will take extra time but will save you time and frustration in the future.

Invest in Packing Supplies. Using the right kind of packing supplies are crucial to keeping all of your belongings clean and undamaged. Most storage facilities offer good supplies at their management office for purchase. Walmart, Target and Lowe's also is a great place to get boxes, tape, markers, and sheets of plastic.

Pack your items in sturdy boxes. Just because you are putting your stuff in a storage unit doesn't mean you do not care about your items. Sturdy boxes will allow you to stack your items neatly and keep your things from becoming damaged.

If you know you will be storing any clothing it is a good idea to get a clothing rack or box to hang your clothes on. They are great for organization as well as quick access. Also make sure you can see the labels on all of your boxes to help save time in the future.

Any long item should be places against a wall neatly - do not lay down on other boxes as they could get bent or damaged. Wrap all mirrors in a blanket and lean up against the wall as well.

Although the floor of your storage unit will be clean you may want to lay down a sheet or cardboard to help protect your items from becoming scratched, dirty or damaged.

Do not over pack boxes with heavy items such as books, files or magazines. You run the risk of a bottom of a box breaking. You may have more room in the box but it will be very hard to lift once you get it in your unit.

Last but not least, do not store food in any cardboard boxes/paper as it will attract rodents. You should use glass jars or containers. You do not want to return to the storage facility and deal with rodent droppings.

4 Methods To Protect Your Electronics When Storing In Self Storage Facilities

When electronic devices are not going to be used for some time, you will need to store it properly. Electronic devices comprise of components such as a printed circuit board, resistors, transistors, semiconductors and wiring. These are extremely delicate items which are assembled in a clean room that is free of dust and atmospheric particles. Imagine storing them incorrectly and the consequences that will follow. What are some of the methods to protect your electronics when storing in self storage facilities?

Remove the batteries

Most electronic devices use alkaline batteries which is a primary battery, meaning that it is non-rechargeable. Alkaline batteries are cheap and have a storage life of up to 10 years when stored correctly. However, all batteries will self discharge and this is accelerated by improper storage methods. Alkaline batteries will leak potassium hydroxide, a caustic chemical which will cause respiratory problems. Not only that, it will react with carbon dioxide in the air to form potassium carbonate which will oxidise copper and other metallic components in electronic devices, leading to permanent circuit damage.

Climate control

Electronic devices are extremely sensitive to moisture and temperature so when you are storing them in self storage facilities, you should utilise a climate controlled unit to store them. A climate controlled unit will definitely cost more, but it is able to provide the proper moisture and temperature that is most ideal for your electronics. In the long run, your savings will be more and your electronics will have a better lifespan.

Anti-static foam

Another natural enemy of electronic devices is the static electricity. Static electricity is due to the imbalance of charges on the surface of a material and is inevitable. Have you ever experienced being static shocked by someone else? Although this amount of electricity may seem very little, it is actually enough to damage your electrical components. Anti-static foams work by pushing the metallic parts of your components into the foam which is made of a conductive material which will conduct away the static electricity present.

Foam peanuts

One mistake many people make is by using bubble wraps to protect their electronics. However, plastics are actually efficient generators of static electricity and as mentioned above, are very damaging to the components. Instead of using bubble wrap, wrap the components using a piece of cotton cloth and protect it with foam peanuts which are very gentle on the parts.

Steak Dinner For Two

Here is what you'll need!

Servings: 2

1 tablespoon butter
2 cloves garlic
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
3-4 Yukon gold potatoes, peeled
2 tablespoons grated parmesan
Chopped parsley, for garnish

Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C.
In a small pot, melt the butter and fry the garlic until it’s just starting to brown.
Add the flour, and whisk until there are no lumps.
Slowly drizzle in the milk while constantly whisking to make sure the mixture is smooth.
Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
Slice the potatoes into about ⅛-inch thick slices, then fan them out in a small baking dish.
Pour the sauce on top of the potatoes, then sprinkle with parmesan.
Bake for about 1 hour, until the top is bubbly and golden brown.
Sprinkle chopped parsley on top, then serve!

Servings: 2

1 head romaine lettuce
4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 avocado, diced
½ cup croutons
½ cup shaved parmesan cheese, plus extra for serving
¼ cup Caesar dressing

Slice the lettuce into about 1-inch pieces, then transfer to a large salad bowl.
Add the bacon, avocado, croutons, cheese, and dressing, mixing until evenly combined.
Serve with additional parmesan on top!

Servings: 2

1 (2 inch thick) ribeye steak, preferably USDA Prime
3 tablespoons canola oil
3 tablespoons butter
3 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed
2 sprigs fresh rosemary
3 sprigs fresh thyme

Preheat oven to 200°F/95°C.
Generously season all sides of the steak with salt and pepper.
Transfer to a wire rack on top of a baking sheet, then bake for about 45 minutes to an hour until the internal temperature reads about 125°F for medium-rare. Adjust the bake time based on if you like your steak more rare or more well-done (you monster).
Heat the canola oil in a pan over high heat until smoking. Do not use olive oil, as its smoke point is significantly lower than that of canola oil and will smoke before reaching the desired cooking temperature.
Sear the steak for 30 seconds on the first side, then flip.
Add the butter, garlic, rosemary, and thyme and swirl around the pan. Transfer the garlic and herbs on top of the steak and baste the steak with the butter using a large spoon.
Baste for about 30 seconds, then flip and baste the other side for about 15 seconds.
Turn the steak on its side and cook to render off any excess fat.
Rest the steak on a cutting board or wire rack for about 10 minutes. Slicing the steak before the resting period has finished will result in a lot of the juices leaking out, which may not be desirable.
Slice the steak into ½ -nch strips, then fan out the slices and serve!

This is a facility that is provided to residents of a particular area, where they can rent storage space for safe keeping of their property. The self storage is very secure because it has an all time round security cover from the authorities. In addition you the self storage space that you take has well secured doors and you will be the only one with the key to that very space. Some may think that self storage is meant for the clutter that does not have space in your apartment but the reality is that you can use the self storage facility to keep your vital equipment save until you can use them again

Self-Storage Ideas For Business Proprietors

Many small business owners usually look for space to keep extra inventory, equipment or documents. The self-storage facility can be the ideal extension of your enterprise with numerous benefits.

Most storage firms offer lower fees on per square foot basis with monthly lease terms and not the six to twelve month terms in commercial real estate. Access hours are convenient since these are beyond standard office hours. Some service providers even offer 24/7 access for multiple locations. Spacious parking space is also provided for trucks and client vehicles. Self-storage can help entrepreneurs in terms of efficient and profitable operations. It gives you the edge over competitors choosing traditional warehouses or leasing additional office spaces.

With this system, you can keep seasonal merchandise until these are needed. These products use up plenty of space and face the risk of getting damaged while in transport. Self-storage is the answer to these issues. The process also deals with the problem of untidiness in the workplace. Document filing consumes too much time. Besides, you should find space for filing cabinets and large cartons. With self-storage, all you need is to transport these papers, boxes and cabinets to the facility. You can also use the unit to keep old furniture and idle equipment. The stuff can be retrieved anytime you need them.

Nowadays, data storage has become automated. In fact, nearly 100 percent of enterprises depend on computers. Nonetheless, paperwork cannot be eliminated totally. Self-storage is the solution for companies with documents to be preserved. These do not have to be stacked in the office after all where the papers will be secure and not exposed to pests.

One of the main concerns if you have to purchase supplies in bulk is storage. Again, this is an economical solution. You save by buying in volume. At the same time, there is no need to worry about keeping these things. It is possible to store slow-moving goods until you can sell them to customers.

Most service providers have climate-controlled storage units. These are perfect for items that are sensitive to extreme temperatures like electronics, papers or expensive furniture. The facility may be quite expensive but you are assured that your possessions will not be damaged. Instead of looking for multiple storage unit owners, look for the self-storage firm that has a huge network of facilities in a particular location. Therefore, the inventory will be close to your client base.

What Are The Many Benefits of Using Self Storage For Home Owners and Business Owners?

There are many reasons home owners and business owners make use of self storage facilities. Self storage offers numerous benefits and in this article, I will talk about some of the main benefits of using self storage facilities.

Benefits Of Self Storage For Home Owners

Hoarding - when we have the desire to hold on to things, we want to create some space for those things so we can use them later on in our lives. Many people have this fear of throwing things which they think may be useful for them in the future. There are numerous examples of people in the self storage industry of renting a storage space which they can use to collect items which they cannot store in their homes anymore. In most families, hoarding can cause a real problem because it creates an actual reduction in the living space. When we make use of self storage facilities, we can clear that space in our homes and at the same time retain those items.

Reduce Clutter - whether it is home or office, storage space can help reduce clutter and free up the much needed space.

Security - there is more security offered by self storage facilities than we can find in homes. Apart from a simple lock, there are security fences, gated entry, surveillance cameras, exterior lighting, limited after hours entry and security guards. If you have valuable items in the house which you are going to use later on, it is best to put them in self storage facilities.

Safety - the safety of your family is important and for this reason, it is not a good idea to have tools and other renovation related equipments in the home. This is especially true if there are small children in the house. If you have tools such as drills, saws, ladders and other power tools lying around, consider keeping them in a storage facility. This will reduce risks of accidents and injuries.

Space For Large Items - most people like the idea of owning ski boats, vintage cars, canoes, etc. If you do not have enough room for these items or if you are looking to provide protection against the weather conditions, then renting a self storage unit can be the best choice for you.

A self storage facility which is professionally run will allow you free access to your belongings at any time. They will provide you a code to enter the facility gates and your own key to the storage unit you have rented. Home owners often use these self storage facilities for peace of mind that their valuable or sentimental belongings are stored securely and safely. In a storage facility, you will find a secure environment which is clean and dry. The storage facility will be protected with various security systems ranging from 24-hour guard protection to CCTV security.

Benefits of Self Storage For Businesses

Before looking at the benefits, let us check out some of the main business uses for self storage. These include:

- product and sample storage
- archive storage
- home office storage
- office relocation furniture and stock storage
- emergency storage such as in case of storm, flooding, smoke damage and fire
- seasonal stock storage such as Christmas stock during the festive season
- business stock overflow storage

Self storage gives businesses increased flexibility. Whether it is a small business or a large business, they all need some kind of storage. There are many reasons for this which range from creating a mini warehouse to take care of trade supplies to creating a distribution point for a sales team.
Some of the main reasons why businesses need self storage include:

Making the most of office space

Office spaces are quite costly these days and when you pay so much money on office space rental, you must ensure that the space is being used to achieve maximum benefit. Offices which are filled up with less frequently used paperwork, excessive equipment, and unused furniture items or archive files can make work difficult. Moreover, a survey has revealed that an average company may end up paying about 1,200 a year to maintain space that is occupied by a medium sized filing cabinet. When you compare this amount with cost of renting a self storage unit to store that unnecessary or rarely used filing cabinet, you will see that you can save close to 600 on just one filing cabinet. Today most companies have recognised the benefits of storing paperwork, rarely used furniture and equipment offsite by making use of self storage facilities.

Easy expansion

Are you looking to relocate just because you think that the current office space is not adequate to meet your needs? If so, why not consider freeing up some space by removing those unnecessary file cabinets, unused equipment and loads of paperwork which are rarely referenced. If you make use of self storage facilities to store these rarely used items, there will be no need for an expensive relocation. Instead you will be able to free up the much needed space that will provide for easy expansion.

Costs benefits

- rental is paid on a month to month basis which means that no yearly lease is required
- when compared to the cost of office space, self storage rental rate is competitive
- businesses also get assistance when they need to move their items for free
- to make the best use of the storage unit, shelving can also be made available
- you can also receive discounts
- it is better to use office space to generate income rather than use it for storage

- keeping valuable documents offsite protects against natural environmental damages such as fire
- only you have access to your individual space
- you get 24 hour security for your valuable items

- Trolleys and pallet jacks making it easy to move your items
- It is easy to receive pallet deliveries
- You can access your items 7 days a week
- Packaging materials are available on site

- provides a flexible storage option for businesses which are stock based
- flexible in terms of space as well as facilities
- there are a number of self storage facilities which require just a day or 7 days notice to reduce or expand your storage space depending on your requirement
- flexible rentals
- no long term lease
- flexible facilities such as bulk storage, forklifts, loading bays, drive up units, etc
- short term commitment

However, before you choose a self storage facility, consider the following eight essential questions.

1. What security measures are in place?
2. Does the facility offer 24/7 access?
3. Are there different sized units available?
4. If the self storage facility close to my home?
5. Can shippers drop off or pick up shipments?
6. Are there any kinds of discounts available?
7. Is the management professional and the facility clean?
8. Are there any hidden costs apart from the monthly rental?

Top Tips for Using Self Storage Facilities

Putting your furniture into self storage can be a great option if you're in between house moves, are a student and need somewhere to keep your belongings during the holidays or if you have more stuff than you do space. In order to help you get the most out of putting your items into storage, below are some top tips to bear in mind when using these facilities.

If you're unlikely to need to access your belongings whilst they're being stored away, opt for the smallest unit you can get away with and pack it full to save yourself money. If you will need to access items from time to time, then it's worth going for a bigger unit as this will give you space to move around and organize things in a way that enables you to get to everything quickly and easily.

Use packing accessories such as bubble wrap, boxes, plastic containers, sheets and furniture covers. This will protect and maintain your belongings while they're being stored away and will also prevent dust from gathering on them.

If you are going to need to get things in and out of your unit, make sure you store everything in a logical way. For example, write what is in every box so you don't need to unpack everything whenever you need something. Also try to store the things you might need at the front of the unit and the things you're unlikely to need at the back. Remember to create walkways between stacks of boxes as well because if you don't do this, whenever you need something you will have to move every single box until you find the thing you need. Finally, don't forget to label everything so you know what's in which box.

Use the space that you have well. For example, if you're storing a wardrobe, boxes can he kept inside there. Items such as sofas and beds can also be stored on their sides so they don't take up as much floor space.

Use boxes that are uniform. If you're using boxes that are all the same size then this enables you to store everything neatly on top of each other to maximize the space you have.

In order to prevent your items from getting damaged, keep heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on the top. Doing it the other way around could result in fragile goods getting crushed. Furthermore, also ensure that all your boxes are filled to the top, even if you do have to fill any gaps with padding. Boxes that are half full may collapse if anything is stored on top of them.

How To Protect Your Valuables When Keeping Them In Self Storage

Putting your valuables into self storage is a great way to keep them safe and secure as well as free up some space in your home. The last thing you want however is to find that when it comes to collecting your items, they have become damaged because they weren't stored properly.

In order to ensure that your items look as good as they did the day you packed them away, below are some great tips on how to protect your valuables when keeping them in self storage.

Furniture - furniture is often very expensive so the last thing you want is to find it's unusable when you need it. When storing it away, make sure that all furniture is kept off the ground on something like a wooden pallet. Ensure that you put plastic over the pallet as well as this will prevent moisture or mold reaching your items.

Applying wax to wooden furniture beforehand can help it to stay looking great and having any upholstered furniture cleaned can preserve it for longer. Covering everything with a dust sheet will prevent it from becoming damaged and also consider rodent repellent as an extra precaution.

Electronics - computers, televisions, scanners, photocopy machines, laptops and any other electrical equipment is not only fragile but probably expensive as well. Naturally, you want to ensure that these items are well protected and you can do this in a number of ways.

Try to store them in the original box they came in and individually wrap each item in bubble wrap. Not only will this protect them from getting damaged by dust but if they do happen to get dropped, the packaging should hopefully prevent the item from breaking.

Appliances - the most important thing to do when keeping appliances in self storage is to ensure they're thoroughly washed and dried before you put them away. This will help to prevent build-ups, rot, rust and attracting pests. Also try to leave the doors of the appliances slightly open to allow air to pass through so you're not greeted with a horrible musty smell when you want to use it again.

Paperwork - people wrongly assume that it's easy to store paperwork because you simply put it away in a box and forget about it. Unfortunately, paperwork can be hard to preserve and the last thing you want to find it that the ink has faded or pests have eaten it.

In order to avoid this happening, think about climate control. This is useful for managing humidity (when it's too humid, mildew can occur.) A constant and moderate temperature will help to preserve your documents as will an airtight container.

Keep boxes off the floor and consider keeping any papers in a filing cabinet as this offers an extra layer of protection. The added benefit of this is that you will easily be able to locate particular documents as and when you need them.
