Remove the batteries
Most electronic devices use alkaline batteries which is a primary battery, meaning that it is non-rechargeable. Alkaline batteries are cheap and have a storage life of up to 10 years when stored correctly. However, all batteries will self discharge and this is accelerated by improper storage methods. Alkaline batteries will leak potassium hydroxide, a caustic chemical which will cause respiratory problems. Not only that, it will react with carbon dioxide in the air to form potassium carbonate which will oxidise copper and other metallic components in electronic devices, leading to permanent circuit damage.
Electronic devices are extremely sensitive to moisture and temperature so when you are storing them in self storage facilities, you should utilise a climate controlled unit to store them. A climate controlled unit will definitely cost more, but it is able to provide the proper moisture and temperature that is most ideal for your electronics. In the long run, your savings will be more and your electronics will have a better lifespan.
Another natural enemy of electronic devices is the static electricity. Static electricity is due to the imbalance of charges on the surface of a material and is inevitable. Have you ever experienced being static shocked by someone else? Although this amount of electricity may seem very little, it is actually enough to damage your electrical components. Anti-static foams work by pushing the metallic parts of your components into the foam which is made of a conductive material which will conduct away the static electricity present.
One mistake many people make is by using bubble wraps to protect their electronics. However, plastics are actually efficient generators of static electricity and as mentioned above, are very damaging to the components. Instead of using bubble wrap, wrap the components using a piece of cotton cloth and protect it with foam peanuts which are very gentle on the parts.
