Tips For Packing Your Storage Unit
It can be confusing to know what size storage unit to get for all of your belongings. You do not want to get a unit too small for all of your stuff. This causes you to over pack your unit and often means some of your things will get damaged because of the way you were forced to pack. You also do not want to get too large of a unit and pay more than needed. Packing your storage unit efficiently will help you avoid both of these mistakes. Here are a few tips that will allow you to organize your storage unit and keep your items from becoming damaged:
Consider What you are going to store ahead of time. It is important to think about what items you want to store in your unit before you go and look at facilities and prices. Is this unit going to be for items you wont need in the next year or will you actually remove and replace items in your unit often? Knowing this it will help you realize how organized your items need to be.
Think about how you want to pack your storage unit before you get there. What items will you not need to get to in the near future? These are usually the items you will want in the back of the unit. Knowing this, you will want to pack these items last in your truck or trailer so they can be the first items loaded into the unit. Planning the organization of your unit will take extra time but will save you time and frustration in the future.
Invest in Packing Supplies. Using the right kind of packing supplies are crucial to keeping all of your belongings clean and undamaged. Most storage facilities offer good supplies at their management office for purchase. Walmart, Target and Lowe's also is a great place to get boxes, tape, markers, and sheets of plastic.
Pack your items in sturdy boxes. Just because you are putting your stuff in a storage unit doesn't mean you do not care about your items. Sturdy boxes will allow you to stack your items neatly and keep your things from becoming damaged.
If you know you will be storing any clothing it is a good idea to get a clothing rack or box to hang your clothes on. They are great for organization as well as quick access. Also make sure you can see the labels on all of your boxes to help save time in the future.
Any long item should be places against a wall neatly - do not lay down on other boxes as they could get bent or damaged. Wrap all mirrors in a blanket and lean up against the wall as well.
Although the floor of your storage unit will be clean you may want to lay down a sheet or cardboard to help protect your items from becoming scratched, dirty or damaged.
Do not over pack boxes with heavy items such as books, files or magazines. You run the risk of a bottom of a box breaking. You may have more room in the box but it will be very hard to lift once you get it in your unit.
Last but not least, do not store food in any cardboard boxes/paper as it will attract rodents. You should use glass jars or containers. You do not want to return to the storage facility and deal with rodent droppings.
